Topics Innovative methods of ethics research, teaching and implementation
The field of ethics is developing rapidly. This methodological area of focus is transversal in nature, meaning it involves an interconnected, interdisciplinary approach that cuts across multiple disciplines and themes. The field develops, tests and critically reflects on innovative methods of ethics research, participatory formats, teaching and implementation.

It serves as the methodological backbone for the Center’s thematic areas of focus while pursuing its own research on how participatory, embedded, and experimental ethics can be evaluated and further developed. Through the development and application of innovative methods and the establishment of ethics laboratories for research and teaching, it supports the thematic areas 1-3. We focus in particular on participatory and embedded ethics.
Workshop series on ethics methods and methodology
In order to develop established methods and employ novel methods of ethics research, the Jellinek Center launches a workshop series on ethics methods for scholars of ethics and related fields.
Ethics and Participation Labs
Labs are mid- to long-term platforms designed to develop and anchor innovative approaches to institutionalising ethics, providing spaces for institutional co-design, interdisciplinary reflection, and empirical ethics research. They may take the form of interdisciplinary units and will also encompass larger, cluster-related ethics projects such as in the EXC SynthImmune, cross-faculty professorships, or third-party funded graduate schools. By establishing and sustaining Labs, the center will achieve its main structural impact for UHD. Specifically, two labs will be established: An Ethics research Lab (Heinzelmann) for behavioral experiments, and a Participation Lab for societal involvement and respective research.

Ethics Lab
The lab enables researchers to investigate empirical questions related to ethics, including areas such as moral psychology, action theory, applied ethics, or epistemology. Available tools include qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys, computer-based interactions, and virtual reality.
Ethics competence database
As an integral part of UHD’s scholarly ecosystem, the Jellinek Center establishes a university-wide ethics competence database that allows for further method development, networking and the establishment of cooperations. This database will be accessible to all members of the university and, in part, to scholars worldwide.
